Quatrième de couverture :

In 1972, a plane crashed in the Andes mountains, if anyone survived they were hopelessly lost in the worst place on earth to survive.

After eight days of heavy snowfall, the rescue party was abandoned. In 1972, after eight days of heavy snowfall over the Andes mountains, the search for survivors of a missing Fairchild aeroplane ceased. Even if the plane could be found, the likeliness of the forty-five passengers and crew being found alive was remote. Yet ten weeks later two emaciated men fell to their knees at the sight of a Chilean peasant tending his cattle in a remote Andean valley. After these two men finally persuaded the incredulous authorities that they really were survivors of the missing Fairchild plane, they led a rescue team to the site of the crash, the remaining fourteen survivors and a tale of horrific bravery.

Putting to rest the rumours and criticism the survivors came into, Alive exposes the inescapable truth and stark courageousness of how they lived to tell their story. Weakened by starvation, extreme cold, and by the awful knowledge that the search had been called off, the survivors had to face the torturous reality of their situation: to live, they must eat the flesh of their dead companions...

Description du livre Softcover. Etat : New. Product DescriptionA classic in the literature of survival. -NewsweekOn October 12, 1972, a Uruguayan Air Force plane carrying a team of rugby players crashed in the remote, snow-peaked Andes Mountains. Ten weeks later, only 16 of the 45 passengers were found alive. This is the story of those ten weeks spent in the shelter of the planes fuselage without food and scarcely any hope of a rescue. They survived by protecting and helping one another, and coming to the difficult conclusion that to live meant doing the unimaginable. Confronting nature at its most furious, two brave young men risked their lives to hike through the mountains looking for help-and ultimately found it.ReviewA classic in the literature of survival. - NewsweekA great book . . . . an incredible saga. Reads accomplishment in recording a struggle both physical and spiritual is superb. - Philadelphia InquirerA chilling tale. Will involve the reader as thoroughly as the best adventure novel. A book of real and lasting value. - Rolling StoneSuperbflawless. Out of the forty-five original passengers and crew, only sixteen made it off the mountain alive. For ten excruciating weeks they suffered deprivations beyond imagining, confronting nature head-on at its most furious and inhospitable. And to survive, they were forced to do what would have once been unthinkable .This is their story -- one of the most astonishing true adventures of the twentieth century.About the AuthorPaul Piers Read is the author of numerous, critically acclaimed works of fiction and nonfiction, including A Patriot in Berlin (1996), Ablaze: The Story of the Heroes and Victims of Chernobyl (1993), On the Third Day (1989), and A Season in the West (1989).
