The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark - Couverture souple

William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616) was an English poet, playwright and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. He was born and brought up in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613.

Set in Denmark, the play dramatises the revenge Prince Hamlet is called to wreak upon his uncle, Claudius, by the ghost of Hamlet's father, King Hamlet. Claudius had murdered his own brother and seized the throne, also marrying his deceased brother's widow... Lo spettro compare per la prima volta poco dopo la mezzanotte e si fa subito notare da Orazio per la somiglianza con il defunto sovrano; rimane però muto, e poco dopo scompare. I due restano in attesa di altre apparizioni. Orazio spiega così a Marcello che il figlio di Fortebraccio sta riunendo un'armata ai confini della Norvegia, per riprendersi i territori che il padre ha perso in un duello con il defunto re. Prima dell'alba riappare il fantasma, ma quando è sul punto di parlare in seguito alle continue richieste di Orazio, canta il gallo e con questo suono scompare.
