Hardcover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Kirkus review: ". The authors have compiled brief, pithy character sketches of the Great Villains, presenting us with the all-time honor roll of monsters and misters, perverts and punks, fratricides and matricides, child molesters, torturers, sadists, tyrants and blue meanies: "they are, we assume, sizzling in hell." They begin with Parysatis who lived in the Fourth Century B.C. and enjoyed having her foes skinned alive, and end with John Johnson, better known as Liver-Eating Johnson because of his culinary fondness for the raw livers of Crow Indians. In between there's old Nero who sewed up Christians in animal skins and threw them to the dogs; Atilla the Hun who slew St. Ursula and 11,000 foolish virgins; and Gilles de Rais who practiced necromancy and torture-murdered at least 200 children. And lots more. Being genuine historians they generally get their grisly facts right. Maybe they're a little unkind to England's King John of Magna Carta fame. (In some contemporary academic circles he's been rehabilitated. But then again some academic circles will rehabilitate anyone.) In deference to Women's Lib several emancipated ladies are included and it quickly becomes obvious that race, creed, color, national origin, or sex are no obstacle to infamy. Johnson and Turner linger fondly over the details of beheadings, immolations and poisonings, supplying a running commentary that's flip as a whip and turning all the evil doings into ghoulish high camp (which is, we suppose, better than breast-beating lamentations on Original Sin)." 299 pp plus 5 page bibliography 299 pp. solid secure no tears or unwanted markings within the text block Coouple of darkened stains on the black cloth cover front.
