Hardcover. Etat : Very Good condition. No jacket. Second Edition Revised. Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1959. Very Good condition. A clean, tight, unmarked copy. Sharp corners. Previous owner's tiny label on front pastedown. Pages are fresh and crisp. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. First printing of the 1959 Second Edition, revised by Harriet Chappell Owsley. Footnotes. Bibliography. Index. Bound in the original red cloth. From the publisher: "When King Cotton Diplomacy was first published in 1931, its revolutionary conclusions contradicted years of earlier Civil War writing, for most historians attributed to moral causes Europe's failure to intervene. King Cotton Diplomacy challenged these old beliefs, pointing out that the reasons were largely, if not wholly, economic, and from its first appearance received wide acclaim for its originality, thoroughness, and careful documentation. Throughout the greater part of the Civil War the King Cotton philosophy kept high the southern hopes for European intervention. Convinced that there was no substitute for southern cotton and that the lack of it would cripple the European economy, the Confederate leaders were sure that England and France would eventually be forced to enter the war on their side. Until well into the third year of the war they acted on this theory, and it was hard for them to realize that neither England nor France would intervene." NEVINS I, 265. Second Edition Revised. Hardcover. Very Good condition/No jacket. 8vo. xxiii, 617pp.
