An original promotional photograph of the young ballerina, signed and dated by her on 16 December 1917. Lopokova was touted as a star from her beginnings at the Imperial Ballet School in Russia, where she danced for the Tsar. She joined Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1910, quickly rose to principal ballerina, and gained worldwide recognition as a pioneering dancer. This photograph of Lopokova was taken in Chicago on one of the Ballets Russes tours of America. She visited London the following year, where she first encountered the Bloomsbury group, a collection of artists and intellectuals with whom she is now associated. In biographies of Virginia Woolf, E. M. Forster, and Vanessa Bell, Lopokova is often relegated to the footnotes, but at the time, the ballerina's fame outshone that of her contemporaries. "Tiny, fast and feather light, with a leap almost as high as Nijinsky's" (Mackrell), she was the darling of London, acclaimed (and courted) by the city's intellectual elites at a time when ballet was considered a "modernist battlefield" (ibid). Lopokova was a friend of Picasso and a former mistress of Stravinsky, and the economist John Maynard Keynes - despite being an avowed homosexual - fell in love with her. His affections were reciprocated, and the unusual couple moved in together in the spring of 1923, just weeks after becoming lovers. The Bloomsbury group eventually warmed to the dancer in their midst, and while Woolf maintained an icy exterior, her diary records her fascination with Lopokova: "how does her mind work? Like a lark soaring, a sort of glorified instinct inspired her?" (quoted by Fernald). Anne E. Fernald, The Oxford Handbook of Virginia Woolf, 2021; Judith Mackrell, Bloomsbury Ballerina: Lydia Lopokova, Imperial Dancer and Mrs John Maynard Keynes, 2008. Original sepia-toned silver print (188 x 205 mm) mounted on card (227 x 287 mm). Framed and glazed with conservation acrylic glazing (framed size 322 x 334 mm). Edges a touch creased and silvered, corners rubbed, upper tips detached from image, professionally re-adhered to mount, bright and well-preserved.
