Hard Cover. Etat : Very Good Plus. First Adventure Library Edition. Hard cover, 8vo., in half gray buckram over illustrated paper covered boards, the titles printed in gilt upon olive green labels to the spine, map end papers, xxiv, 397 pp. Condition. Very Good Plus, with some rubbing to the boards, one small discoloration on the rear board. Otherwise sound, firm and bright. This was one of Australian-born war correspondent and travel writer Alan Moorehead's (1910-1983) best known books about the history of African exploration, complete with many illustrations, photo reproductions and maps. The Victorian push to find the source of the White Nile began in 1856, and ended in 1888 with Richard Burton and John Speke's discovery of Lake Victoria. (The Blue Nile, another branch, was addressed in a separate title.) Part biography, part novel-like prose, Jeremy Bernstein who writes the Preface, recommends the author's ability to size up a place or person with a concise elegance. A classic read in exploration and discovery.
