Etat : Gut. Deutsche Erstausgabe. 213 (3) Seiten. 19,2 cm. Guter Zustand. - Jean Rhys (eigentlich Ella Gwendolen Rees Williams) (* 24. . Second edition, first impression, of Rhys's second novel, originally published in 1932. This copy has the typed address label of Olwyn Hughes, Rhys's literary agent, pasted to the front free endpaper, and may be a retained copy for distribution by Hughes to advertise her services. After the Second World War, Rhys lapsed into obscurity and her books fell out of print. This title was reissued following the success of her masterpiece, Wide Sargasso Sea, published in 1966. Hughes (1928-2016) and Rhys lived close to each other in north London, where they first struck up their professional relationship. Hughes gained a reputation as a fierce negotiator on behalf of her clients: she managed the literary estate of Sylvia Plath and the work of her brother, Ted Hughes. This autobiographical work is a "perfectly told tragedy of a young woman who was equally lost in the narrow world of Paris and the wide world of London" (ODNB). Mellown A3c. Octavo. Original red boards, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. A very good copy indeed, spine ends a touch bumped, couple of spots to edges and foot of front free endpaper, in like dust jacket, head of spine slightly nicked, rear panel toned and faintly marked, else bright.

First edition, first impression, a handsomely bound copy of the author's second novel, a "perfectly told tragedy of a young woman who was equally lost in the narrow world of Paris and the wide world of London. More, much more, will be heard of this unsentimental and assured young author" (Daily Herald, 12 Feb. 1931, p. 6). This title was published before Rhys slipped into obscurity and poverty. In 1949 the actress Selma Vaz Dias placed an advertisement in the papers enquiring for Rhys's whereabouts and seeking her permission to adapt another of her novels, Good Morning, Midnight (1939), into a BBC programme. This contact, and further efforts by Vaz Dias and others in the publishing field, led to Rhys's re-emergence into the literary community, the republication of her books, which had fallen out of print, and the eventual publication of her masterpiece, Wide Sargasso Sea (1966). "Like other modernist writers, Jean Rhys transformed autobiography into art. Her first four novels have contemporary metropolitan settings, London or Paris, sometimes both; they all centre on a heroine, drifting, unsettled, and displaced, living in rented rooms or cheap hotels, economically dependent on men, aware that her sexuality may be her only means of survival" (ODNB). Octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in dark blue morocco, spine lettered in gilt, raised bands with gilt beaded roll, twin gilt rule on turn-ins, burgundy endpapers, edges gilt. A fine copy.
